The Indianapolis News Guild signed a two-year contract with USA Today Co. for unionized IndyStar employees.
The collective bargaining agreement will lift minimum salaries for our lowest paid members, bump up employees who have been working at the Star or other USAT papers for more than a decade and protect our jobs from being replaced by new artificial intelligence technology. In addition, the Guild won compensation for members asked to fill in for management and more personal leave for new workers.
Over two years, the contract will inject around $167,000 into our newsroom through across-the-board raises and new minimums at a time when inflation is rising and merit raises are stagnating in the industry.
The contract was ratified on Sept. 9 by a 32-0 vote with an 84% participation rate among dues payers.
